Teaching the digestive system to elementary kids can be a blast! Teaching the EngageNY ELA domains in second grade, we had an entire unit on the human body, so we got HANDS-ON! I used these activities to demonstrate the components of the digestive system. We explored from food being mashed up in our mouths with saliva and teeth, to an example of esophageal peristalsis, to the stomach, to the small intestine, and finally the large intestine! The kids were complete engaged the entire time and it was a fun learning experience.
Included in this pack are the directions you need to complete the same hand-on demonstration with your class. There are also sequence writing pages for students to follow up by writing about the experience, tying in procedural writing. Next, I included some experiment writing pages and a mini book with questions about the digestive system. There are also blank pages for the mini book. You can use this as a reflection book, observation journal, or as you would like. Mix and match pages, then print double-sided, flip on the short side, with an even number of pages.
***All writing pages come with or without a fancy border.
