I created 6 different activities where the students are to estimate how many items will fit in each object. There are two versions of each activity. One version asking children to use stars (stickers), cereal, blueberries, pompoms, or seeds. However, I understand that those items might not be doable for everyone so the second version asks the students to use counters. That way you can use whatever you’d like.
Depending on what I am trying to teach or the needs of my students I use this task in different ways.
Sometimes this is in independent center, homework, or morning work as review.
Sometimes I use it as a teaching tool. When I do this I will often put five or ten pieces of cereal (for the bowl printable) together. Giving the students this visual will help them make a more educated guess as to how many pieces will fit in the bowl. I will also do the same activity with different sized cereal pieces. We will talk about if the estimations would be different. And then why the actual amount is either more or less. I like asking open ended questions such as asking if there are other ways we could get a different amount of actual pieces in the bowl.
Just a couple suggestions! :) Use as you see fit!
