Have you ever wished that there were comprehension manipulatives just like math? Blocks, boards, and other resources are used to make abstract math concepts reachable for students. Now, there are reading manipulatives too!
These manipulatives and teaching ideas have worked so well with students of different ability and grade levels over the years that I want to share them with you. By using visuals and hands-on props, abstract concepts such as main idea can become more understandable. This supports brain research about incorporating multiple portions of the brain while learning.
This document contains:
* Printable main idea manipulatives
*Three days of lesson plans that explain step-by-step how to teach main idea in a hands-on way
*Four main idea learning center games
*Two Common Core aligned main idea worksheets
These manipulatives and ideas are designed to teach students what main idea means, how to identify the main idea in a text, and how to state the main idea of a passage. I use this document before handing students traditional main idea graphic organizers or worksheets.
