-THREE levels of task card passages. (2nd, 3rd, and 4th)
-Instructions for the students. (PIE and ADE types of Author's Purpose)
-Instructions and pictures for the teacher.
-Rubric included on the task card for easy assessment of mastery.

What is Hands-On Author's Purpose?

An Author's Purpose lesson that will allow students to read a passage, construct a graphic organizer with their hands and some simple supplies, then complete their graphic organizer.

Instructions:

-Pass out a reading task card to each student. Cards are differentiated in three different levels. Level=Grade Level.
-Pass out a bag with the Graphic Organizer Supplies to each student.
-Supplies:
--Pattern Blocks
--1 Dry Erase Marker
--1 Wipe (to clean off blocks)
-Each student will read the task card.
-Students will look at the BUILD YOUR GRAPHIC ORGANIZER card and construct their graphic organizer.
-Students will write the number of the paragraph that matches the correct author’s purpose letter.
--Students will write a keyword that helps them know the author’s purpose of the paragraph.
-The teacher will check the graphic organizer using the rubric on the task card.
Students will wipe off the shapes when finished.


NOTE: By using dry erase markers to write on the shapes, the students can just wipe the shapes off and your supplies are reusable!

All supplies are reusable so you are not wasting the supplies. The kids will be highly engaged and will love working with their hands. Building the graphic organizers also makes the graphic organizer more meaningful to the students.
