What is Hands-On Inference?

An Inference lesson that will allow students to read a passage, construct a graphic organizer with their hands and some simple supplies, then complete their graphic organizer.

Instructions:

-Pass out a reading task card to each student. Cards are differentiated in three -different levels. Level=Grade Level.
-Pass out a bag with the Graphic Organizer Supplies to each student.
-Supplies:
--6 Puzzle Pieces (the pieces need to connect in pairs)
--Pen or Pencil
--Each student will read the task card.
--Using the six puzzle pieces, the students will pair them up into 3 groups of 2 (that connect.)
--Students will write “inference” on the left pieces and “text evidence” on the right pieces.
--Students will make three inferences (making sure they can be supported with text evidence) and write them on the left pieces.
--Students will support those inferences with text evidence on the right side pieces.

The kids will be highly engaged and will love working with their hands. Building the graphic organizers also makes the graphic organizer more meaningful to the students.
