Have you ever envied the math teachers that get to do all of the fun hands-on lessons? I know I have! Being departmentalized, I always miss the hands-on experiences from Math and Science.
I am bringing Hand-On Reading (Sequence) to you!
-THREE levels of task card passages. (2nd, 3rd, and 4th)
-Instructions for the students.
-Instructions and pictures for the teacher.
-Rubric included on the task card for easy assessment of mastery.
What is Hands-On Sequence?
A Sequence lesson that will allow students to read a passage, construct a graphic organizer with their hands and some simple supplies, then complete their graphic organizer.
-Pass out a reading task card to each student. Cards are differentiated in three different levels. Level=Grade Level.
-Pass out a bag with the Graphic Organizer Supplies to each student.
--5 pipe cleaners
--1 piece of construction paper
--Pencil (or marker)
-Each student will read the task card.
-Students will look at the BUILD YOUR GRAPHIC ORGANIZER card and construct their graphic organizer.
-Students will cut 5 squares out of the paper they were given.
-On each square, they will write an important event from the story.
-The students will poke the pipe cleaners through the top of their squares then make the chain in the picture. (Make sure all events are in logical order from the text.)
The kids will be highly engaged and will love working with their hands. Building the graphic organizers also makes the graphic organizer more meaningful to the students.
