Have you ever envied the math teachers that get to do all of the fun hands-on lessons? I know I have! Being departmentalized, I always miss the hands-on experiences from Math and Science.
I am bringing Hand-On Reading (Summary) to you!
-THREE levels of task card passages. (2nd, 3rd, and 4th)
-Instructions for the students.
-Instructions and pictures for the teacher.
-Parent Letter Asking for Lego Duplos
-Rubric included on the task card for easy assessment of mastery.
What is Hands-On Summary?
A Summary lesson that will allow students to read a passage, construct a graphic organizer with their hands and some simple supplies, then complete their graphic organizer.
-Pass out a reading task card to each student. Cards are differentiated in three different levels. Level=Grade Level.
-Pass out a bag with the Graphic Organizer Supplies to each student.
--18 Lego Duplo Blocks
--Painters or Masking Tape (three pieces each)
--1 Dry Erase Marker
-Each student will read the task card.
-Students will look at the BUILD YOUR GRAPHIC ORGANIZER card and construct their graphic organizer.
-Using a dry erase marker, students will write B, M, E on the correct blocks (for beginning, middle and end.)
-Students will use a sharpie, write a summary of the text on the tape (beginning, middle, and end,) then put the tape on the blocks.
-The teacher will check the graphic organizer using the rubric on the task card.
-Students will peel the tape off the blocks when finished.
All supplies are reusable so you are not wasting the supplies. The kids will be highly engaged and will love working with their hands. Building the graphic organizers also makes the graphic organizer more meaningful to the students.
