Teach observation and inference skills through an exciting chemistry lab experience. Students work in group to observe properties of common house hold chemicals (baking soda, salt, sugar, corn starch, chalk, borax and talcum powder). Labs include: physical properties, chemical reactions, water solubility, solutions & suspensions, starch indicator, pH, heat reaction. After collecting data from these Labs, Students will test a "unknown"/unlabeled substance (one of the chemicals above) and identify it. A further challenge can be at mix two chemicals and have students identify both.
This unit takes place in groups with rotating assigned jobs it is so also great for teaching collaborative skills.
