This activity it a great hands on task to use during any unit on subtraction (take away). Students start with an equation differentiated by the teacher (5 take away 3 = ___ or 10 - 7 = ______) which is placed on the rectangle. Students put the total number of counters from their equation in the tens frame, then take the other addend away by placing that many counters in the cup that is resting on the circle. It is also a great activity to use when introducing the subtraction symbol. Easily differentiated for numbers above 10!
