The Handsome Jack Bundle: A Halloween Story with "Stop and Draw" Comprehension Boxes and Activities
Handsome Jack is a dandy of a pumpkin, and the first one chosen off the rack. He makes a fine jack-o-lantern. Of course, we all know what happens to jack-o-lanterns after Halloween. They sit on the porch, unlit, forgotten, slowly turning jack-o-rotten. Then it’s into the compost, jack-o-splat, and that’s the end of that. Or is it?
Handsome Jack is a 300 word story-poem written by me (Sherri Stockdale). The story has "stop and draw" comprehension question boxes throughout the body of the story. Unlike comprehension questions at the end of a story, which simply test comprehension, stop and draw boxes actually aid students’ comprehension by guiding them to stop, think, ponder and predict before reading on. This is a great activity for small groups to work on together while you are working with another group. It also works as a whole class activity or a reading comprehension assessment.
Included in this bundle, you will find:
1. The Handsome Jack Stop and Draw Student Story Packet and Answer Key
2. The Vocabulary Activity: The Handsome Jack Fill in the Blank Vocabulary Student Page with the vocabulary words and definitions from the story
3. The Rhyming Words Activity: The Handsome Jack Rhyming Words Interactive Class Activity with cut out cards as well as a word bank for completing the rhyming word activity independently
4. The Sequence Card Activity: Illustrated pictures of the story to cut out and put in order. Aids students in retelling and summarizing the story.
