While I was attending a conference on How to Teach the Common Core, the presenter made an offhand comment that really stuck with me: “Handwriting fluency has a direct correlation to comprehension.” She had data to back this fact up, but I cannot remember who studied it or where she found this information. I looked at my principal, who was at the conference with me, and I said, “that makes so much sense, can I try it?!?” Luckily, she was willing to take a risk with my crazy idea and it really paid off, in more ways than I could have even thought! I was so inspired by what my students were producing that I wanted to put together a pack that I could start using at the beginning of the year. What I love most is that it only takes 15 minutes a day!!!
This pack is meant for grades 2 and 3, but I will be working on a pack for k-1 and 4-5 soon!
I store all of the students work in binders or folders for easy access!
To save on copies, print 2 of each passage, double sided. Do day 1. Then, have your students put their passage in a sheet protector sleeve with a dry erase marker for the practice days. On the last timed write, take out the passage page and have your students complete on the paper.
Passages have been borrowed from readworks.org and revamped to ensure correct lexile level
