What sounds do the letters make?

Follow and repeat explicit printing directions for each letter used in the 42 basic sounds.

Can you find and draw things that use these sounds?

*** Avoid stick and stone letters!

“Let’s get ready to print!” sheets are provided to become familiar with the printing directions. (e.g. slide your pencil, draw a line across, bounce back up, swing around, make a caterpillar/c/)

Suggestions:
• Use the activities on these pages as teacher demonstrations, while the students echo instructions, and print in the air… or on paper.
• Print the pages for the class, small groups, or individual students.

• On each sound page, please clarify what the pictures represent… before the child begins the activity. (i.e. qu- quail)
• Sight words that are used in the sentences: the, is, I, my, see, has, me, that, this, was, you, have, put, to.

• Note: It is important to talk to the children about how “START AT THE TOP” refers to, “Start at the top of the letter.”

Options:
• Copy the lower case letter on one side and the upper case letter on the other side.
• Copy one-sided and use the “on the back activities.”


Samples of explicit directions:

/a/ * This is a short letter. Start at the top. Make a caterpillar /c/ sitting on the bottom line. Slide up to the middle. Bounce back down to the bottom line… and don’t forget the joining tail!

/N/ * This is a tall letter. Start at the top. Slide down to the bottom line. Bounce back up. Slide in and down to the bottom line. Slide straight up to the top.
