This is a small group reader's theater is for 3 students. In the script - Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor woodcutter. When their mother dies he marries again to have someone take care of his kids but she doesn’t like them. Their stepmother is a mean and cruel woman. One day she decides to get rid of them by taking them to the forest and getting them lost. Her plan works. Hansel and Gretel wander around trying to find home and come across a small house made of candy. They are eating it when a witch who lives there captures them. She locks up Hansel and makes plans to eat him. When the witch bends over to check the oven, Gretel pushes her in and lets Hansel out. They search her house for supplies to use as they look for home. Hansel and Gretel find the witch’s treasure and take it with them. When they get home they find their stepmother has died and they live happily ever after with their dad. There is a writing prompt for the students to do at the bottom of the last page.
Third graders need to be on level and may need some extra support to be successful. I use reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency. It is a fun way to do something that they need. My scripts are in black and white with only the occasional color picture on front so they are cheaper and easier to photo copy. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice and you get less off task behaviors.
