Hansel and Gretel Lesson Plan
A great way to introduce students to opera. Most students are familiar with the fairy tale already. There are many children’s books that tell the story, select your favorite and share it with the students. Often the ending of the story is different, so you and your students can compare the different versions of the tale.
The “Music! Words! Opera!” series from GIA Publications does a great book about Hansel and Gretel. If you’re serious about making it a big unit it would be worth it for you to purchase that book.
The Metropolitan Opera in New York has a “Live in HD” DVD of Hansel and Gretel.
When my students did this lesson we were fortunately enough to have the Peabody Opera Outreach do a small production of the opera for our students and it was wonderful. This lesson is great for introducing students to opera and the Hansel and Gretel.
