PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In an effort to create a variety of meaningful writing experiences, middle school students must be able to analyze a text(s) and compare and contrast a variety of items including characters, setting, plot, theme, and more.

This assignment is a wonderful way to encourage this type of writing practice in your classroom. This is a singular essay that asks students to read the short story of "Hansel and Gretel" and to compare and contrast the two characters in the story.

When I assign this to my students, I remind them that all informative essays should include an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs (2 would suffice for this essay), and a closing paragraph. I would also make sure students know that it is essential to cite direct evidence as they write their compare and contrast essay.

*** A venn diagram is included to help students organize their thoughts.
*** A sample essay is also given in order to show students an example of a quality essay.
