In this highly-engaging Hanukkah lesson, students complete three hands-on activities to learn about the history and origins of Hanukkah!

Students complete a guided reading assignment with "check-in's" to make sure they are understanding the content. In this first activity, students are introduced to origins of Hanukkah, the reasons behind the 8-day festival, the importance of the Jewish calendar and the 25th of Kislev, the actions by Syrian King Antiochus, the creation of the Menorah, how the Greeks persecuted Jews for their beliefs, and the miracle of the eight-day oil burning!

Then, students investigate a Customs of Hanukkah handout to familiarize themselves further with this holiday! Students are introduced to the background of the alternate spelling of "Chanukah", the origins of the dreidel, the tradition of eating fried foods (to remember the oil miracle), and the rare of emergence of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving in 2013!

Students then take their knowledge and put it on display by completing a "News Cast" assignment where they, in the shoes of journalists, compile a report that explains the origins of this day! A close-reading crossword puzzle activity is also included to engage all students at any part in this activity!

Enjoy!
