This camping themed unit includes engaging problem solving activities based around the idea of basic needs for survival "food, water, shelter, air, and space" during an imaginary long weekend camping trip. Although intended as a back to school unit, activities could be used at any point in the year.
The unit activities begin with the hands on task of constructing a "Happy Camper" character to act as their avatar for following activities. Students then construct camping structures, and test them against the elements!
While they wait to find out how well their camper survived their adventure, they plan a 4 day camping menu from a limited number of food options, use tree diagrams to decided what clothing items to pack, and roll the dice to find out what the weather was like- and if they packed wisely.
Students will research, or write their own, campfire stories and songs, and then entertain the class around the "campfire".
The package includes teacher tips, and challenge pages for students.
Activities could be modified, depending on grade level.
