Category Picture Sorting
This seasonal literacy activity is designed for P-K and K students. It is perfect for teacher directed small groups such as with the regular teacher or even a pull out teacher like a speech therapist, or reading interventionist. After directions are understood, it would fit fine in a room rotation of different centers. The theme is delightful and will be fun for all to work!
There are 8 different sorts. The categories are letters, numbers, body parts, people, toys, animals, clothes and food. So appropriate for encouraging receptive language and expressive vocabulary skills. There are 8 picture cards for each of the 8 different categories. This is a total of 64 different festive holiday themed pictures.
Prep: Print the cover sheet 2 times. For organizational purposes glue 1 to a manila envelope to keep contents of this literacy center. Print each page one time and laminate. Cut out the category labels and the Holiday rectangle picture cards. For organizational purposes I keep like category pictures together in small baggies so I can determine differentiation each time I use them.
Directions: For easy sorting, choose half the pictures of 2 different
categories. For harder sorting, gradually increase the contents of pictures and categories as students are able. Mix up the chosen pictures and place in a small Christmas sack or container. Place the number of needed Holiday Mats on a work surface. Students take turns picking from the container. The picture card and category (classification) are named and placed on the matching Holiday Mat. (Labels can be placed at the top of the Holiday Mat, but is optional.)
