This set of activities is for the story, I Am a Butterfly, in the Harcourt Trophies first grade series. These activities can be used as needed, for independent practice of specific skills, as small group practice, or as literacy centers. Each activity includes a recording sheet for assessment purposes. This unit includes:
Making Words ~ Students use letter cards to build words. Letters included build words with -tch and -ch.
Floating Away with Vocabulary ~ Students read sentence cards and find the vocabulary word that makes sense. Students record their words on their answer sheet.
Caterpillar's Noun Sort ~ Students sort noun cards (animals and things) under the correct heading. Students add the caterpillar's body to its head (the headings).
Butterfly's Mixed-Up Sentences ~ Students put sets of words cards back together to build a sentence that makes sense. Then students record their sentences on their answer sheet. (Color and Black/White versions included.)
Fluttering Nouns ~ Students read sentence cards and choose the two words that are nouns. Students record the two words on their answer sheet. (Color and Black/White versions included.)
Hatching New Words ~ Students sort cards under the correct word beginning or ending for words with -ch and -tch. Students write down the completed word on their answer sheet. (Color and Black/White versions included.)
Ideas Floating in My Head ~ This graphic organizer can be used with any story or book. Students write down their thoughts and illustrate a picture for their ideas. This is a great activity for making connections!
I hope these activities are enjoyable to use with teaching the skills in the story.
