This set of activities is for the story, On the Job with Dr. Martha Smith, from the Harcourt Trophies first grade series. These activities can be used for independent skill practice, small groups, or for literacy centers! This set includes:
New Vocabulary Check-up~ Students read each sentence card and choose the correct word to complete the sentence. Students record the word on their recording sheet.
Making Words~ Students use letter cards to build words with the ou, ow patterns. Students record their words.
Where Does It Belong? ~ Students sort items into groups of iems that belong together in a room in a home. Then students record their sort and label each group with the name of a room in a home.
Parts of Speech Practice~ Students sort word cards into nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Students record their sort on a recording sheet.
All Kinds of Adjectives~ Students read sentence cards and find the word in the sentence that describes taste, smell, sound, or feel. Students record the adjective on their answer sheet.
Taking a Pet to the Vet~ Sorting Words with ou, ow~ Students sort word cards under the correct heading for the missing letters. Students record the complete word on their answer sheet.
What Are Your Thoughts?~ This making connections page has students respond to the story by explaining the part of Dr. Martha Smith's job that they found important and why.
