This set of activities is for the story, Tomas Rivera, from the first grade Harcourt Trophies series. The different activities in this unit can be used in many different ways, including small group instruction, independent practice of specific skills, and for use as literacy centers. Each one includes a recording sheet for assessment purposes. This unit has the following:
Making Words~ Students use letter cards to build words focusing on the spelling words with /wh/ and /qu/.
Fixing Up Proper Nouns~ Students rewrite six sentences using correct capitalization of proper nouns and using ending punctuation. (Color and Black/White copies included)
Reading to Learn New Vocabulary~ Students read sentence cards and choose the correct vocabulary word for the sentence. Students record their words on a recording sheet.
Sequencing a Story~ Students sequence sentence strips in order based on story events. Students then complete a sequencing activity to match the story.
Characters Take a Look in the Mirror~ This is a graphic organizer that can be used with any story. Students draw a picture of a character from the story and write sentences describing the character.
Sorting /wh/ and /qu/ ~ Students sort rime cards under the correct onset heading. Students then write the complete word on their recording sheet under the correct heading. (Black/White and Color pages included)
I hope you enjoy using these activities to teach the skills in the story!
