After students finish studying different authors during the Harlem Renaissance literary period, students should understand the wonderful effects such a movement inspired.
I chose five inspiring African American individuals whose achievements reflect hard work and sacrifice, epitomes of Harlem Renaissance thinkers.
These individuals include Ben Carson, Maya Angelou, Barack Obama, Tupac, and Bill Cosby.
I have also chosen samples of their work for students to study, compare to Harlem Renaissance writers, and present in an overall lesson to their classmates.
A short PowerPoint presentation will cover the main components of the handout with the instructions for the project.
The student project includes a PowerPoint, poster, lesson plan with two activities, and a comparison essay.
Students will understand how the positive effects of the Harlem Renaissance motivated others to spark the Civil Rights Movement, and overall, contribute greatly to American society.
My students’ presentations were awesome and they worked hard to produce interesting lessons. The comparison project is a challenge but students will continue to build upon what they have learned of the Harlem Renaissance movement and understand the connections and relevancy to life today.
