This unit is ready to go. All lessons and resources are included. There are 8 explicit lessons that have been designed to integrate Literature, Art, Music, and History of the Harlem Renaissance.
The content of the unit encompasses the study of literature, history, art, and music of The Harlem Renaissance. Students will gain a better understanding of how African American authors and artists used their voice and art to illustrate their perspective and perception of the world around them after The Great Migration north into Harlem.
The unit will focus on the concept of change. Students will understand how writers and artists used their literature and art to serve as a proponent for change, as well as illustrate racial pride, and add cultural value to society. They will read poetry and short stories that incorporate generalizations about change, while incorporating all strands of language arts, including: reading, writing, oral communication, and language development. Students will compare and contrast art and literature of the era for the common theme of change.
