In this lesson, students will learn a brief history of jazz and the role the Harlem Renaissance played in it by actually immersing themselves in the music. (links to youtube are provided as well). A worksheet is provided in which students have to describe some of the music that is played on the computer. After each song is over, you ask them how they would describe it. Then you give your own “more educated” opinion on it. Basically, you walk the students through the evolution of jazz. Now I really tried to do my research here because I’m not an expert in music. (I’ll always go the extra mile for my students). So if there is anyone of you who thinks I got it wrong, feel free to correct me but don’t be too harsh. The point here is that hopefully you like the idea of the lesson. If there are any songs you would like to change, please feel free to do so.
