Harlem Renaissance Investigation

"Started using this today and I really like the way it is scaffolded for student use. I just switched the part one and part two of the Close Reading sheet so the students could identify repetitive words because I think that helped them with their summary. Really nice project!!!"

UPDATED: 8/18/15

I used to teach the Harlem Renaissance and I am now going to allow my students to bring their devices to class and try to learn more about it on their own.

It is a fun day and the students get to read, write and discuss what they find.

Here is what is included:

1. Harlem Renaissance Reading: This is a 3 page reading that is to be done either in class or at home for HW. I will included a close reading sheet.

2. Harlem Renaissance Investigation: This is a 6 step investigation to the Harlem Renaissance. I tried to include all the elements of the renaissance as the students dig into the men and women that changed Harlem.

3. Bonus: Close Reading sheet This is from my reading and writing bundle. It might make the Harlem reading a little easier to manage for the teacher and the students.

Step 1: Have students read Harlem Renaissance reading and fill out literacy sheet. This is a great way to get kids thinking in terms of evidence. I break down the paragraphs and themes of the reading to sizable chunks so the students can use them to create some proof as to why the Harlem Renaissance was significant.

Step 2: Students will be using their devices/ headphones to look at some of the key events/ videos and art of the 1920's from the Harlem Renaissance.

The initial Harlem Renaissance reading should be done prior to coming to class as to not take up too much class time. This item includes the Harlem Renaissance reading as well.

US History, History Channel, Harlem Renaissance, English, ESL, Brent Pillsbury, Social Studies, Education, common core standards
