PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Use this as an introductory lesson to poetry, specifically, a Harlem Renaissance unit. For this fun activity, show each slide to students with the recording sheet (as a whole class, just print recording sheet). Go slide by slide and ask students to record whether they think it’s poetry or hip hop lyrics. At the end, go to the answer slide and discuss with students! Enjoy!

I follow this activity up with a powerpoint focusing on The Great Migration and then segue into a close reading of Langston Hughes Poems. After, we compare Langston Hughes to Tupac songs to tie everything together.

Songs/ Poems include works by:
- Langston Hughes
- Tupac
- Run DMC
- Public Enemy
- Claude McKay
- Outkast
- Countee Cullen
