What Does This Resource Include?

In cloze activities, words are deleted from passages of text. Students are asked to supply the missing words, using contextual clues to choose the most appropriate word, from a list of words. Cloze activities encourage students to think critically and analytically about text and content. They can also be used as an assessment tool.
No words have been deleted from this text. It's simply a book than can be used for a variety of purposes!

The purpose of this anticipation guide is to provide an opportunity for student's to activate their prior knowledge, identify misconceptions, set a purpose for reading, and be motivated to read the text. It prompts children to ask questions about what they know and to make connections with new information. In addition, they are asked to revisit the guide after reading to check their understanding and identify any misconnections by highlighting correct information in the text.
4 Open Response Comprehension Questions
Students are provided with space in the booklet to answer these questions. Have student's go back and highlight the text where they found their answers to add another layer of comprehension practice.
How can I use this resource?
Guided reading group
Have students read the regular text during guided reading time. At a later time (e.g., centers, independent work, homework), have students complete the cloze version of the text.
RTI/ Special Education Intervention
Use this cloze book in a RTI group to highlight/model fix up strategies (e.g., reading forward, back, etc.) to complete the cloze. It can also be used to encourage students to monitor for meaning while reading. The word bank provides extra support for readers who have difficulty.
Use the cloze reader to assess student's ability to use comprehension strategies in text, determine which cueing systems readers effectively employ to construct meaning from print and assess the extent of students' vocabularies and knowledge of a subject.
Whole Group Strategy Instruction
To introduce the cloze procedure, teachers can begin with a whole group activity where the entire sentence/passage is read before filling in the blank. Discussion and modeling should occur.
Partner work or small groups
Have children complete the cloze in pairs or groups. The real strength of this activity is that it involves children in discussion. Children have to debate their word choices.
