This reading unit is tailor made to use with Lead Us to Freedom, Harriet Tubman, the biography of Harriet Tubman. She is famous for her work on the Underground Railroad. The novel details Harriet's childhood, her escape from slavery, and her work as an Underground Railroad conductor in a way that is easily understood by a second or third grade student. Biographies are an important component of Reading/ ELA standards, and this biography is particularly well written and interesting for 2nd-4th grade students. It is also a great way to integrate reading and history to meet teaching standards.
