With this purchase, you have secured a list of guided reading questions and a reading assessment for Kurt Vonnegut’s dystopian short story “Harrison Bergeron.” I typically use the guided reading questions for a review or ask the students to use them for skimming and scanning practice. I usually DO NOT ask students to write the answers to all these questions, but certainly, a few of these could be assigned for short-answer writing practice.
Notice that I created the quiz with the PARCC in mind, so you will see a few double-decker questions. Giving students these types of questions throughout the year eliminates the need to cram with test preparation materials as the PARCC test approaches. With this you will expose your students to format—this is not teaching to the test.
Hint: After reading the short story, look on Youtube for a variety of clips of “Harrison Bergeron” movies. Also, keep in mind that this short story is wonderful precursor to the longer dystopia work Animal Farm.
