In this assignment, students will chart the plot elements of the story and write a theme statement. I assign this prior to reading so that students actively search for these elements while reading. They find that this is not as easy as it may seem with this story because they must be able to justify their decisions. Many times students disagree on certain aspects of the plot pyramid. Students must also be able to support their theme statement with events from the plot. I do not want my students to chart minor events, only major events that are significant. I have used this activity with all levels of ability (9th & 10th grade) and as both an individual and a cooperative learning activity.
