The students will be fully engaged in this activity learning all about the science process skills:
-Using their senses
-Making scientific observations
-Making distinguishing qualitative observations
-Working collaboratively, etc.…
You can pair students or group them according to your standards. Read the first part of the handout to the students to make sure they understand what is a dichotomous key is and what they will be doing.
Students working in pairs/groups will:
1 – Spin to choose a “Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans” (I’m using Bean Boozled jellybeans 4th edition because these are inexpensive) using the enclosed spinner wheel or the Bean Boozled app to add a technological “spin”.
2- Using the Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans Dichotomous Key (created by @giftedteacher305) and through observations students will discriminate between two characteristics of each jellybean at each step, and move to get to next step on the dichotomous key.
3- Finally, record their observations, and taste the jellybean to confirm or dispel their conclusion (analyzing skills).
