I created this as a fun activity for my students to tackle word problems and review rounding as well as addition and subtraction with regrouping. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are getting ready for the school year and have discovered that their Defense Against the Dark Arts book won't open without a secret code. Students solve the eight problems to discover the eight digit code. Seven of the problems involve rounding and there is one logic/algebra puzzle type problem mainly because my students love solving them!

Students can check each answer digitally by scanning the QR code on the problem which takes the students to a Google Form for the problem or the teacher can check the answer and reveal the secret number if you prefer a non-digital version. The digital option is great because the teacher is free to facilitate and help students rather than checking answers the whole time.

Super easy prep! Just print out the problems for students to complete and choose whether you want the students to check their answers digitally by using a tablet and Google Form, or if you want the students to check their answers with you. An answer key with the solutions explained is included.

Students will find the problems challenging but engaging- a great collaborative partner activity, early finisher activity, or center. I made this activity for my high level 3rd graders, but it could easily be used by 4th and 5th graders to review rounding as well. Enjoy!
