I use this in my Harry Potter 5th Grade Math Unit
at the end of the year as a review. However, it can be used as a stand alone lesson for finding the volume of rectangular prisms and using that information in real world problem solving.
It is a hands-on activity where students will construct nets to create a 3-d model of their dorm rooms at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Common Core 5th Grade Math Standards Covered:
Geometric measurement: Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
Geometric measurement: Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.
