I had a lot of fun this afternoon brainstorming some activities to use with "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". Includes science, research, and art activities in addition to reading and writing. These are not lesson plans, just an outline of activities to use with the kids. This can be adapted to use with a variety of grade levels. This book's reading level is way too high (W) for my students to read on their own, so my current plans are to do read alouds of selected passages, but if your kids are at higher reading levels, you could do the entire book. Activities and projects can be done as a group or individually, and they can be completed in one day or could be week long projects.
At the end, I'll have my own Triwizard Tournament between groups in my class, and even have a Yule Ball where my students can dress up one day and we'll have our own fancy party. The challenges in my tournament will focus on reading, but I am still looking for ways to incorporate math activities. And for the Tournament, you can seriously use ANY thing, even a regular test, and once a group earns a certain grade on the assignment, they can move on to the next challenge.
For the dragons eggs, I found some large eggs (gold and glitter) at Target in the Easter section, and I'll look for some more at the dollar store this week. I'll hide clues to the second challenge inside the eggs. You could do the same, or have your students make the eggs for another art activity.
Have fun! I'll add some more activities and ideas to this as I go.
