This project is post-unit for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Students will be creating their own collage based on a real world concept/motif of their choosing in society our that they also see in the novel. This project uses analyzing, critical thinking, and creativity! Using this connection, students will find pictures that mirror this concept in both the novels and pictures in a magazine.
For example (pictures soon to come): I created a collage of happy families in magazines I looked through. I then printed off pictures of Harry and Hagrid, Harry, Hermione and Ron, Harry and Professor McGonagall and Dumbledore, and lastly, Harry and his parents. My message was “Love is unconventional.” I used the concept in our society that a happy family is one with a loving and involved mother and father with children who enjoy spending time together. Harry shows that this family stereotype doesn’t have to exist to be happy or successful. I also used a quote in the book to support Hagrid’s love for Harry just as students are asked to do.
This product includes a rubric, clear student handout, a list of ideas for students to get started, and examples.
