Students will begin this assignment by watching the U.S. Presidents Series Video: Harry Truman (on YouTube). The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of Truman's presidency. This video will first analyze what kind of person Truman was, a straight talking and blunt leader. The video initially covers his inauguration following FDR's death, the use of the atomic bomb, and the foundations of the Truman doctrine (The Marshall Plan). The video then goes on to discuss the difficulties of Truman's second term such as: China's fall the communism, the outbreak of the Korean War, and the Soviet's acquisition of atomic weapons. Truman's role in desegregating the military and civil service is also reviewed. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com website and read a biographical article about Harry Truman. His early years and initial foray into politics is discussed as is his role as a senator. The article then goes into greater detail regarding both his terms in office.
