Here is a purposeful way to spend the last two days before the Thanksgiving Holiday! This is a glyph designed for 3rd and 4th grade students using 6 selections of informational text about harvest festival celebrations around the world.
The students work in pairs to read a selection and then answer 9 questions about the selection, recording their answers on the Happy Thanksgiving glyph. The questions seem simple, but require the reader to look carefully for details that sometimes have to be inferred. Then they exchange glyphs with another pair, and by decifering the other pair's glyph, determine which country is being described. That requires a careful reading for facts of all 6 selections!
After they determine the other pair's country, they compare the two festivals using a Venn Diagram. If time remains, they write a comparison based on the diagram.
Common Core standards for informational text and writing that are covered are listed. I researched and wrote the selections that are used.
