Hatchet is a 1987 Newbery Honor-winning young-adult wilderness survival novel written by Gary Paulsen. After a plane crash where the pilot dies, Brian must learn to survive in the wilderness with only a hatchet.

This study guide addresses comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. The comprehension skills that are emphasized are recalling details, drawing conclusions, making inferences, sequencing, finding cause and effect, listing, and outlining.
