This literature unit on Gary Paulsen's Hatchet includes reading response questions, mapping activities, hands-on science experiments and much more. This unit also includes many activities based on the book Survivor Kid by Denise Long. Students are guided through the process of writing their own survival story with graphic organizers, planning pages, and a rubric.
This Literature Connections unit is designed to be student led and is excellent for independent study, homeschooling, or summer reading projects. While the instructions are written to the student, the unit can easily be adapted for use by a teacher in the classroom, or led by a parent in a homeschool setting. If your student(s) is following the guide independently, it is recommended that you discuss the reading response questions and their work with them daily. In order to get the most benefit from this unit, it is highly recommended, though not required, for the teacher/parent to read the book along with the student(s).
