PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This item contains 5 centers used for the novel Hatchet.
The centers include:
- Comprehension
- Vocabulary
- Visualization
- Letter Writing
- Figurative Language

The Letter Writing and Figurative Language Center is the same center, but will obviously change when being introduced to each chapter.

When can I use this?
When you are done reading each chapter ( or two chapters) students will work in groups to complete each literacy center. Allow the students about 20 minutes per center.

How can I use this?
Lucky for you, you can use this literacy center pack in multiple ways. Whatever works best for your classroom!

COMPREHENSION
In the comprehension center, you can do many things. There are 2-3 questions per chapter. Depending on the ability of your students, you can have them answer all questions. You can also differentiate by having the students choose 1 or 2 questions out of the 3.

VOCAB
In the vocabulary center, the students will define the unknown word.
Here are some possibilities (Students can do all or some):
-Students use context clues to come up with their own definition for the vocabulary word.
-Students use a dictionary to define the word and then write their own sentence using that word.

VISUALIZATION
Students will read the question/prompt and will use descriptive language to write a paragraph. In some cases, students will have to put themselves in Brian's shoes.

LETTER WRITING
This center is the same card, however its task will change each chapter.
The students will pretend that they are writing a letter back home to mom or dad. They will pretend that they are Brian and write about the experiences that he is encountering throughout each chapter. The language should be informal since it is in the form of a letter.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
This center is the same card, however its task will change each chapter.
The students will find examples of figurative language used in each chapter. The amount of figurative language you want the students to find depends on your students and their abilities. I tried 5-6 with my 6th graders and I was successful.
