This novel study is based off of the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. The novel study is broken up into six different readings. Chapters 1-3, chapters 4-6, chapters 7-10, chapters 11-13, chapters 14-16 and chapters 17-19. It also ends with a final assignment while reading through the epilogue and then cumulating reading questions. Each section of reading is broken down into four different types of reading work. The first section is vocabulary and dictionary work and determining the meaning of unknown words, the second part goes with the vocabulary and has students match the vocabulary word to the section of the book it came from to help reinforce using context clues. The third, and biggest section, is comprehension questions. Many different levels of questions are included such as inferencing, predicting, understanding quotes, main ideas and basic questions. The last second is on their thoughts and making connections to the text. This section is included to help lead a fun discussion while reading!
The end of the book discussion has cumulating reading questions which have students think about the entire book. It also has questions based on character traits, comparing and contrasting the character to themselves, thinking of different events and thinking about what they would do in similar situations as the character.
