Survival Reality Show Inspired Project for Hatchet
This project is designed to wrap up a Hatchet novel study with a bang! Inspired by reality shows like Survivor and American Idol, I came up with this real-world project for the classic Gary Paulsen text. Engagement is high because students get to take on the role of reality television judges!

After reading the novel, students will study expert opinions on the various types of skills necessary to survive in the wild. Students look at four major needs: water, food, shelter, and fire. There are 2-3 sources linked for each need. Students also have the option to find their own source. Students must compare Brian’s actions in the novel to the expert opinions and give him a rating based on whether or not he followed their advice. There is also a slide students must complete that addresses Brian’s transformation throughout the story. Finally, students make an argument for whether or not Brian can move on the final round.

Please note...
Students will need access to technology and the internet to complete this project. Students work directly on the PowerPoint or Google Slide. Also, please review the resources linked within the student presentation. While I believe these resources to be middle-school appropriate, your own judgment may differ. You will also need to ensure all the sites are accessible on your school network. Two of the resources are short YouTube videos. If your school blocks YouTube, you might want to delete these links before sharing with students.
