Two day assessment for Hatchet. Students are tasked with finding three key events that either helped Brian survive, or hurt his chances or survival. Students will then discuss how they would have changed those events for better results. Packet contains an alternate assessment where students only have to identify 2 events over three. That is geared towards our students who struggle with writing and comprehension.
The second day's assessment is to use those three events to write a brief survival explanation/story as if they were in Brian's shoes. The rules are simple: 1. They cannot change events to make their survival story shorter than Brian's and 2. They cannot alter the ending of the book. The students are trapped for the same amount of time as Brian.
Examples of what students can't do: 1) I took CPR training in school so I saved the Pilot's life and we flew all the way there. 2) I used smoke signals and got the first planes attention...etc.
