This unit features Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech, a novel told in poems. It includes 15 lesson plans of 45 minutes each. Each lesson plan integrates reading Creech's story with writing poetry using techniques mentioned in the book. As Jack, the story's narrator, learns and writes about alliteration and onomatopoeia, children see examples of his writing and use it as a model for their own. The lesson plans contain references to other poems that can be used as "mentor texts" to children learning how to use new poetic techniques.
