I have been teaching Kindergarten for six years and I am always looking for the best way to monitor and encourage classroom behavior. In the past, I have utilized the green, yellow, and red card approach. Although I found this system great for monitoring behavior…it discouraged negative behavior, but did not encourage positive behavior. I have done my research and love the idea of a ladder system. You hang up the bucket as follows from top to bottom: Star Student, Role Model, Good Day, Ready to Learn, Slow Down, Think About It, and Parent Contact. This allows for all students to start on “Ready to Learn” and move up for positive behavior or down for negative behavior. It allows for positive reinforcement of model behavior and it discourages negative behavior.
