The Common Core Learning Standards are requiring students to read texts closely, use the details from the text to answer questions, become critical thinkers about what they read and to develop a deeper understanding of the texts they read and listen to.

This packet contains 6 short answer constructed response questions and 1 extended response prompt for the story Have You Seen Duck?, by Janet A. Holmes and Jonathan Bentley. This is a Level J text. The questions in this packet are text dependent and require students to do a close read of the text and use specific examples and details from the text in their answers. The short response questions provide students with an opportunity to answer questions as they read the story and the extended response question requires students to synthesize what they have learned from the story in order to write a complete response and answer multiple questions about the text. The questions in this packet can be used in a variety of ways including in a readers’ response journal, answered right in this packet, for literature circles or to lead a small or whole group discussion.

These questions allow for students to take an active role in their own learning by having them be responsible for reading and revisiting the text in order to provide answers that demonstrate their comprehension of what they have read. It is designed for second grade students who are reading at a Level J but can also be used for first grade students who are reading above grade level expectations or for third grade students who are not yet meeting grade level expectations.
