If you are learning about the 50 U.S. States and their symbols, have a Hawai'i (Hawaii) state unit planned, or a Hawai'ian (Hawaiian) themed classroom-- this cootie catcher is a fun way to incorporate some state facts and Hawai'ian vocabulary. The cootie catcher features Hawai'i's state flag; state bird, the Nene; state flower, yellow hibiscus; state fish, Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, and state capital, Honolulu.
Hawai'ian vocabulary words for numbers one through eight are included with a phonetic spelling on the cootie catcher number area. On the internal flaps, students fold up their numbered choice to learn eight different Hawai'ian language words: ocean (moana), turtle (honu), house (hale), money (kala), star (hoku), island (mokupuni), song (mele), and rainbow (anuenue). The flaps contain the Hawai'ian word, a phonetic spelling of it, and the word in English.
The 8.5"x11" printable page has instructions for how to fold the cootie catcher printed on it and instructions for play. There are two full-color options for printing, one color ink-saving option, and a grayscale option.
This cootie catcher is also a great social studies cultural enrichment activity for students vacationing in Hawai'i with their families.
