In 1898, the United States annexed Hawiian. This was not a decision that has always been considered a popular one. The lesson plan and supplements in this product begin with a simulation that allows students to consider what it would be like to be annexed. You can build your lesson around the documents provided.
Meeting the needs of all learners can be challenging especially when analyzing documents. This product provides you with different strategies to use to help you differentiate instruction.
The documents provided avoid using background information or prompts so that students will have to rely on their knowledge of social studies and what conclusion they make from their analysis of the documents when answering constructed response questions. The documents in this product are also presented without prompts or questions for higher level learners. Graphic organizers are provided so that you may use them as you see fit. The graphic organizers can also be used for other documents that you may use throughout the course of the school year. The 20 slide powerpoint presentation features a slide with discussion questions and notes that you may use during the lesson. There is an additional activity using questions that mirror the short answer constructed- response questions that appear on the New York State Global History Regents Exam. A t-chart so that students can explore arguments for and against Hawaiian annexation.
Great to use as an independent assignment, closure, think-pair-share activity or homework. The flexibility of these materials will allow you to blend activities from this product to lesson plans that you already use.
