I use this powerpoint to introduce Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter to my juniors in American Literature. There are a few topics and activities included here:
1. Discussion of the Puritans--their beliefs and culture (to understand the setting)
2. Discussion of Romanticism (to understand the writer's context in his own time)
3. A drawing activity (to establish the novel's guiding images that are set up in Chapter 1.)
The Scarlet Letter is a great book and I love teaching it, but it requires a lot of background. Students are often confused between the time period of the setting and Hawthorne's own time period. I try to set up that distinction here, explaining that Hawthorne is viewing the Puritans through his own Romantic lens.
