When using Headbands to do traditional review or concepts, students can give the headband wearing student clues to guess their card (such as giving an equation or remembering an example from a reading, writing or math lesson.)
When using Headbands to do integrated problem solving, students are given open-ended problem solving questions or tasks, OR they may come up with their own question/ task.
**It is important that there is NOT one correct way to solve, but that the emphasis is on communicating reasoning for their choices. It is in this realm that you can really raise the level of thinking and student ownership. Visual organization, flow chart style, and individual interpretation will open your and students’ minds to the bigger patterns in our world.
Taking pictures of student integrated problem solving and writing notes about student reasoning and then posting on the wall or in a binder for reference is a powerful way to change your classroom dynamic from teacher – led/ right-answer-only/ fixed-mindset thinking to a place where thought and revision are more valued by you and students (Growth Mindset!)
